START: The Old School Centre - SOUTH BRENT - SUNDAY 9th September - 09.30
| Although
The South Hams is renowned for its hills this ride is relatively gentle.
Of course there are one or two hills but nothing that most riders should
have serious problems/trouble with. This ride leaves from South Brent heading out through Bittaford to Ivybridge and then follows the cycle path to Lee Mill. It then cuts across country to Yealmpton, continuing up a hill and then along the flat before descending into Bridgend (pictured below). From Bridgend there is a gentle climb out through Membland and then a gentle road through Battisborough Cross to the main A379 (Plymouth road). This is followed for approx I mile and then you follow the A3121 past Ermington on a flat road that eventually starts to climb gently to Kitterford Cross where you then turn back toward Wrangaton and then onto South Brent and back to the main Control. After some refreshments you head out through Avonwick, Diptford and Moreleigh, on undulating roads, to join the main Totnes to Kingsbridge road for half a mile approx before turning off toward Slapton. You follow more gently undulating roads before descending into Slapton and then along along Slapton Lee to Torcross and the Control at The Sea Shanty. After more refreshments, if so required, you carry on to Stokenham and along roads that undulate to Coles Cross and on through Kellaton to Stanborough Hundred where you join the main Kingsbridge to Totnes road, that could be busy for 400 m approx before turning off on quiet lanes to retrace towards Moreleigh. As you enter Moreleigh you turn right, effectively straight on, and continue to Harbertonford. You are then on the home stretch as you turn off by the church encountering a climb before East Leigh and on through Elwell to Avonwick, along quiet country lanes. Once in Avonwick you retrace the outbound route up the hill, through Horsbrook, to South Brent and the Control at The Old School where you can enjoy more refreshments. For the more enthusiastic of you why not enter the GRUNTERS 150Km ride. This is much hillier, and a great practice run if you're thinking of doing the DARTMOOR DEVIL in October.
