THE SOUTH HAMS AUDAX & GRUNTERS CYCLE RIDES

These two rides take place annually in September and are organised by CTC Devon, under Audax UK regulations.

The easier SOUTH HAMS AUDAX is a 100Km ride through undulating valleys of the South Hams, a very scenic part of Devon.
The route is normally done as two loops,
leaving from South Brent heading out through Bittaford to Ivybridge and then follows the cycle path to Lee Mill. It then cuts across country to Yealmpton, continuing up a hill and then along the flat before descending into Bridgend (pictured below).
From Bridgend there is a gentle climb out through Membland and then a gentle road through Battisborough Cross to the main A379 (Plymouth road).
This is followed for approx I mile and then you follow the A3121 past Ermington on a flat road that eventually starts to climb gently to Kitterford Cross where you then turn back toward Wrangaton and then onto South Brent and back to the main Control.
After some refreshments you head out through Avonwick, Diptford and Moreleigh, on undulating roads, to join the main Totnes to Kingsbridge road for half a mile approx before turning off toward Slapton. You follow more gently undulating roads before descending into Slapton and then along along Slapton Lee to Torcross and the Control at The Sea Shanty.
After more refreshments, if so required, you carry on to Stokenham and along roads that undulate to Coles Cross and on through Kellaton to Stanborough Hundred where you join the main Kingsbridge to Totnes road, that could be busy for 400 m approx before turning off on quiet lanes to retrace towards Moreleigh.
As you enter Moreleigh you turn right, effectively straight on, and continue to Harbertonford. You are then on the home stretch as you turn off by the church encountering a climb before East Leigh and on through Elwell to Avonwick, along quiet country lanes. Once in Avonwick you retrace the outbound route up the hill, through Horsbrook, to South Brent and the Control at The Old School where you can enjoy more refreshments.

The GRUNTERS 150 is a much harder event, designed for someone who enjoys a stiff challenging ride. Whilst you do have ample time to complete the Grunters, the hills across Dartmoor can be difficult, especially on a hot Summers day, and once have descended from the moors you then have a lot of up and down in the South Hams, before you get to the control point at the Grunters Cafe at East Portlemouth. Some have likened the event to riding the dartmoor Devil, but with better weather!

Advanced entry for both rides is recommended, although you may be able to get an on-the-line entry depending on numbers
