POTHOLES!

With over 9000 miles of road in the county it's inevitable that sooner or later you're going to run into a pothole.
The Council staff can't possibly monitor every road and lane.  BUT WITH YOUR HELP MAYBE THEY CAN!

CTC (and other organisations) do "Pothole Cards".   These are report cards which you send on to the relevant local authority,
and a copy to the CTC.  Once the authorities know about a defect, it makes it much more likely that it will be repaired,
especially if there is a chance that it may cause an accident.

Many of the roads are in a poor state of repair, and many of the repairs carried out are poor, only last a short period of time,
and are often not much better than the defect!  One of the biggest problems is excess gravel left on the roads
after surface dressing. It's not unknown for several inches of the stuff to be left piled at the edge of the road
- this is something authorities will usually respond if notified.

IN 2007 CTC launched a new website for reporting defects On-LINE:

Cycle lane(?) at gateway on Shaldon Hill.

Trgoback.gif (10813 bytes)Believe it or not there is a cycle lane here.  CTC suggested to the council that this was not a good site for a cycle lane because mud would flow out of an adjoining bridleway.  Look what happened a week after it was liad, - and it's been like it ever since! A waste of money, resources, and time consulting!

Another view of one of Exeter finest.  A few years back Exeter got the award for the countries biggest pothole ("The Sun" Newspaper). It was jut a few yards from this one!  Nothing changes.Trnext.gif (9166 bytes)

You would probably end up riding over this on the way to the Exe Cycle Route.
