THE GRUNTERS 150Km |
START: The Old School Centre - SOUTH BRENT - SUNDAY 9th September - 08.30
| This
ride is not for the weak at heart as it is a very hilly ride over Dartmoor
and then around Prawle Point in The South Hams. The Hills and Roads can
be steep narrow and slippery with bends that are unexpected and sharp. The high moor is exposed and usually colder than the start. There can be leaves, hedge cuttings, grit and other debris as well as overgrown hedges on the roads, which if wet can be slippery. Some of the roads are single track with little or no room for other vehicles, so CARE needs to be taken. Please make sure that you ride within your ability and make allowances for the unexpected. It heads out of-South Brent towards Buckfastleigh before climbing up onto Dartmoor through Scorriton and Hexworthy and continues across Dartmoor to the first Control at Princetown. From here it retraces to Two Bridges and then sets out through Postbridge climbing on past The Warren House Inn to Challaborough Cross before the next Control. It then continues downhill towards Widecombe in the Moor. Before Widecombe it heads towards Ponsworthy and Leusdon and onto a downhill section through Hembury Woods and then onto Buckfast before returning to the Control in South Brent. From here it then heads off through Diptford, Moreleigh and Blackawton before descending and then climbing out to the road to Strete. From Strete it then continues downhill towards Torcross, with magnificent views over Start Bay. The two miles to Torcross is FLAT along Slapton Line, some respite before it climbs out of Torcross and continues up and down to the Control at Granters Cafe in East Prawle. Now you continue on another FLAT road towards East Portlemouth and then descend to the Tidal road continuing on to South Pool and its `Hill' and onto Frogmore and Sherford and another `Hill'. After a few more `Ups and Downs' you reach Stanborough Hundred on the Kingsbridge to Tomes road, which could be busy. From here you are on the main road for 400 metres approx before branching off on quieter roads. You then make your way to Harbertonford, from Moreleigh. From Harbertonford there are a few more `Little' ups and downs passing through East Leigh, Elwell and Avonwick before you return to the Final Control at South Brent and some `Well Deserved' refreshments. |
